Discovering the underground world: “Open Caves” returns to Friuli Venezia Giulia on September 12 and 13.

Friuli Venezia Giulia treasures an underground heritage of rare beauty, carved by water and time. On the occasion of the International Day of Caves and Karst (established by UNESCO), on the weekend of Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, the region promotes the initiative “Open Caves”: two days dedicated to highlighting and discovering the region’s subterranean wonders with free guided tours.

The 5 Show Caves with Free Access

During the weekend, the region’s five main show caves will open their doors to the public for free (reservation required):

  • Grotta Gigante (Sgonico, TS): World-famous for containing the largest natural hall in the world accessible to tourists.

  • Grotta Nuova di Villanova (Lusevera, UD): Known for its atmospheric tunnels and unique aragonite calcite formations.

  • Grotta di Pradis (Clauzetto, PN): A striking complex of gorges, canyons, and caverns rich in prehistoric history.

  • Grotta-Chiesa di San Giovanni d’Antro (Pulfero, UD): An extraordinary blend of speleology, history, and spirituality set in the Natisone Valleys.

  • Grotta Torri di Slivia (Duino-Aurisina, TS): A masterpiece of Julian Karst featuring impressive stalagmites and stalactites. Book now.
